🌲 FORESTS AREN’T JUST STORING CARBON — THEY’RE COOLING THE EASTERN U.S. 🌎🌳
Forests may be doing far more than fighting climate change. New research published in Earth’s Future suggests they can also act as powerful natural cooling systems.
🌡️ Key findings:
• Forested areas across the eastern U.S. were about 1–2°C cooler at the land surface than nearby grasslands and croplands on an annual basis.
• During midday in the growing season, the cooling effect increased to around 2–5°C.
• Relatively young forests showed some of the strongest cooling effects, particularly forests around 20–40 years old.
• The cooling wasn’t limited to the ground — nearby air temperatures were also up to 1°C lower during midday in the growing season.
• At some paired forest–grassland locations, surface temperatures differed by 4–5°C.
🔬 Researchers combined data from 58 AmeriFlux tower sites, satellite observations and 398 U.S. Historical Climate Network stations to examine how forest cover influences temperatures.
🌱 The bigger message:
Restoring forests could potentially deliver two climate benefits at once — capturing carbon while reducing local heat.
So, should reforestation be viewed not only as a climate-mitigation strategy, but also as a powerful climate-adaptation tool?
