What once sounded like science fiction is becoming reality. China is deploying solar-powered AI robots to plant trees across its northern desert regions under the country's massive Three-North Shelterbelt Program, also known as the "Green Great Wall."
These autonomous robots can drill into dry, hardened soil, plant seedlings with minimal human supervision, and recharge themselves using onboard solar panels while working. In one demonstration, a single robot planted 160 seedlings in just 20 minutes, achieving an impressive 70–80% survival rate—more than 10 times faster than traditional manual planting.
The initiative aims to combat desertification, reduce sandstorms, restore degraded ecosystems, and support long-term climate resilience through clean energy and artificial intelligence.
